NATIONAL INTER CLUB ‘DENNY CUP’ QUARTER FINALS – WELLINGBOROUGH IBC

Wellingborough IBC visited Cheshunt IBC on Saturday, 21st January, 2012,  with a coach-load of supporters, plus others who travelled in cars in support, when they took on the might of Cyphers IBC, Beckenham, Kent, in the National Quarter Finals of the biggest men’s Inter Club Indoor competition, the ‘Denny Cup’   It was always expected to be a very hard match with the Kent club having several regular England Internationals in its team, including one of the best known in the world, Andy Thomson, who has been a top player for decades and is still picking up trophies.  He was not the only International in the Cyphers team for he was joined by Tom Doig, Paul Field, Terry Heppell, and Martin Sekjer.

Wellingborough picked up an advantage of 1 shot after the first end at 4-3 but that was the only time they held a lead until the 11th end across the green had been completed and this was the culmination of a run of good ends from a position where their players were as many as 11 shots adrift at one stage, but they got 1 shot in front.  This lead was, however, only very briefly held as the next 2 ends saw Wellingborough drop 16 shots to only 2 gained which put them very much on the back foot.  The 14th end was good for the County Club as their players picked up 8 shots to 1 conceded, helped enormously by a 5 shots pick up on Paul Broderick’s rink, but the recovery was not sustained as in the next end their opponents had a net gain of 8 shots and they were 14 shots up with 15 ends played.   This advantage was not seriously challenged for the remainder of the match, despite some excellent bowling by the County men and Cyphers maintained a decent lead to the end, winning by 12 shots.

It is fair to say that Cyphers had the edge in bowling skills with all of their internationals playing very much to form with perhaps the exception of Paul Field who met a very determined and skilful rink skipped by Paul Broderick who saw his men collect a 15 shot win..   Neil Corbyn drew the ‘short straw’ in getting Andy Thomson who had as his number 3 the very accomplished Terry Heppell.  These two played some exceptional bowls and although the County rink lost, the score against them was not reflective of the bowls they played, especially the front end and both Walt Winsor and skip Neil Corbyn played many excellent bowls only to see the result either not go their way, or Thomson following up with a killer bowl.  Maurice Allen’s rink had a real battle against the very experienced Martin Sekjer and his men, and overall matched their opponents all the way with very few shots separating them throughout, and the County men took the advantage by 2 shots at the end.   On Jamie Walker’s rink Cyphers always had the upper hand with the young international player Tom Doig playing exceptionally well throughout the match to collect a 13 shot win..

The final score was Wellingborough 67 shots – Cyphers 79 shots.  Rink scores, Cypher skips only, as follows:

Rink 1.                        Callum Height/Paul Coley/Martin Walker/Jamie Walker 13 shots – Tom Doig 26 shots

Rink 2.                        Dave Love/Bob Fuller/Wayne Gregory/Paul Broderick 27 shots – Paul Field 12 shots

Rink 3.                        Scott Johnson/Curtis Johnson/Walt Winsor/Neil Corbyn 8 shots – Andy Thomson 24 shots
