1.         NORTHAMPTONSHIRE MEN – MIDDLETON CUP PRACTICE MATCH – RESULT

The men of Bowls Northamptonshire Men’s Section visited a new venue for the now customary Middleton Cup Practice match, travelling to Oxford City and County BC , on Saturday, 12th May, 2012.   With several regular Middleton Cup players unavailable for this match, an opportunity was given to some ‘fringe’ players who are ‘knocking on the door’ for recognition, including several younger players like Sam Gamble of Desborough, Connor Cinato of Kettering Midland Band, and Shaun Marriott of Northampton West End.   Against a nearly full strength Oxfordshire team it was expected that this would be a tough match, and for the first half of the game it was mostly in Oxford’s favour, although the County did not let them get far ahead for at the halfway stage the difference was a mere 4 shots.

Over the next 5 ends the County overtook their opponents and went into a very healthy 14 shots lead, and five ends later the lead had grown to an impressive 26 shots with just 1 rink losing.   Oxon made a concerted effort to break into the lead, although having few ends left to do so, it was nigh on impossible.  However, they did pull back the overall lead for the County at the end to just 12 shots, and on the very last end for each rink saw the home team pick up a total of 12 shots to just 1 shot conceded.    The final score was Northamptonshire 117 shots – Oxon 105 shots.  Rink scores, Oxon skips only, and those County names in parenthesis played the second half of the match, as follows:

Rink 1.                        Rob White(Sam Gamble)/Martin Walker/Jonathan Brown/Phil Reeve 15 shots – Calvin Carpenter 18 shots

Rink 2.                        Matt Wordingham/Martin Cinato/Richard Lemon/Vernon Gearey 17 shots – Martin Sykes 15 shots

Rink 3.                        Callum Height/Alan Ashby(Shaun Marriott)/Andrew Manton/Jim McKee(Alan Ashby) 19 shots – Colin Nicoll 13 shots

Rink 4.                        Dave Love/Daniel Height(Mick Malins)/Phil Exley/Neil Corbyn 27 shots – Ian Snowdon 13 shots

Use of ground sheets in national competitions and championships

Following several enquiries, Bowls England wishes to clarify the interpretation of Regulation 53.1.17 - Ground sheets. In the event of no decision being reached IN ANY ROUND owing to exceptional weather conditions, and where this makes it impossible to re-arrange a fixture before the completion date, the aggregate score, in uncompleted matches in which five ends or more have been played, will stand as the result unless otherwise specified. If the score is a tie then the result will be decided by the toss of a coin.                                                                                                       Matches not started and matches in which less than five ends have been completed will be decided by the toss of a coin, or by mutual agreement.                                                                                                                               Portable/moveable groundsheets are not acceptable for National Championships or Competitions. The word 'portable' relates to those ground sheets that are taken up after each end. These have not been approved by the governing body. Fixed ground sheets which remain 'in situ' throughout the match are the only ones acceptable. Please refer to Laws of Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Second Edition 1.3.12 Ground sheets and 19.1.1-19.1.5.

EARLS BARTON BC

Annual Tour to Bristol

The men of Earls Barton set off on their annual bowls tour on Thursday, 3rd May, 2012. The destination this year was Bristol with fixtures against Bath , Clevedon and Weston-Super-Mare . Although it rained on the way down to Bristol the weather improved day by day culminating with playing in sunshine on the final day.

The first match was against the Alexandra Bowling Club, Bath , where a match of 6 rinks took place. A close win of 96-91 got the men of Earls Barton off to a great start on a cold and windy day but in a glorious setting overlooking the City of Bath . This winning score included an 8 (hot shot) by one of our rinks skipped by Michael Griffin

On Friday, 4th May the team travelled from Bristol to Clevedon to play the Clevedon Promenade Bowling Club and as the name suggests this was adjacent to the coast. A warm welcome from the hosts and an exciting match again of 6 rinks resulted in a second win for Earls Barton by 131-98       .

The final fixture of the tour was against the Ashcombe Bowling Club in Weston-Super-Mare . This time the match was of 5 rinks and on an afternoon of sunshine the team played their best bowls of the tour and gained a resounding win of   103-86       .

An excellent tour, organised brilliantly once again by Club President, Richard Paintin returned to Earls Barton undefeated against very strong opposition. The members have decided to return to Bristol next year and take on other Clubs in the area.
